Why Choose a SUP Expedition?
Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) has exploded in popularity over the last decade, becoming one of the most accessible and enjoyable ways to get on the water. While it has roots dating back thousands of years, the modern sport evolved from the surf beaches of Hawaii into a versatile discipline suitable for long-distance touring.
For DofE participants, SUP offers a unique vantage point. Standing up gives you a better view of the wildlife and scenery than sitting down! It engages your core, builds balance, and is a fantastic team activity. Modern touring boards are stable, fast, and capable of carrying all the camping kit required for a multi-day expedition.
Where Can You Paddle?
Just like canoeing, SUP expeditions can take place on various water types depending on your skill level.
Canals & Sheltered Water
Ideal for Bronze: The UK's canal network offers calm water that is perfect for beginners. It allows groups to focus on balance, paddle technique, and navigation without dealing with river currents.
River Running
Ideal for Silver and Gold: Moving water adds an exciting dynamic. We teach you how to read the river, manage flow, and navigate downstream safely while carrying your expedition kit in dry bags on the board.
Open Water Touring
Ideal for Gold: For the ultimate challenge, we can plan routes on larger bodies of water or coastlines (weather permitting). Touring boards track straight and fast, making long-distance journeys incredibly rewarding.
Training & Safety
We provide qualified staff to train you in safety, rescue techniques, and navigation. SUP requires a different set of skills compared to walking or canoeing, particularly regarding balance and weather awareness (wind is a key factor!).
We find that SUP training is full of fun and laughter. It is also an excellent alternative for those who cannot physically walk for long distances, allowing them to achieve their Award alongside their peers.
