Before The Expedition

The Team

There must be between 4 and 7 participants in a team (up to 8 for tandem modes of travel like canoeing).

Supervision

All expeditions must be supervised by an adult who accepts responsibility for the safety of the team.

Assessment

Assessment must be by an Accredited Assessor. (At Bronze level only, the Assessor may also be the Supervisor).

Planning The Journey

Team Goal
Expeditions must have a clearly defined team goal – e.g., researching an area of interest, a community project, or developing soft skills.
Environment
The environment must become progressively more challenging through the levels (rural -> open countryside -> wild country).
Accommodation
Usually camping or bunkhouses. *Exceptions: Participants with medical needs or disabilities may return home to sleep if required to make the expedition accessible.
Time of Year
Expeditions usually take place between the end of March and the end of October.
Mode of Travel
Journeying must be by participants’ own physical effort (Walk, Canoe, Cycle). Mobility aids may be used where appropriate.
Food
Participants must plan a menu, including cooking and eating a substantial hot meal each day (optional on the final day).

On Expedition Rules

  • Behaviour: Participants must behave responsibly towards team members, the public, and animals, adhering to the Countryside Code.
  • Independence: Expeditions must be unaccompanied and self-sufficient. Supervision is remote to ensure welfare while allowing independence.
  • Debrief: Participants must actively participate in a debrief with their Assessor. At Silver and Gold, a presentation must be delivered after the expedition.
