The canoe is one of the oldest forms of transport in the world, and was an essential lifeline to civilisations in the remote parts of the world. Today, canoeing is about fun and jorneying for pleasure into the interesting life of a river. We offer a variety of canoeing activities, from a half day to a 5 day expedition in the UK.
HALF DAY CANOEING £35
Join us as we present the quiet and secretive Teifi Gorge, an excellent and rare example of a post glacial gorge cut deep into a large slate outcrop. We start at the entrance to the gorge and paddle up through the wilderness to Cilgerran Castle and rapids at the other end. The area includes a variety of habitats from ancient woodland, river ecosystems, estuary, salt marsh and they support a huge range of wildlife including otters, red deer, dragonflies, reptiles, salmon, oystercatchers, red kites and kingfishers. Our trip isnt all about wildlife, as we cruise back downstream we'll come to the Grade I-II rapids, created by the slate quarrying in the gorge.
FULL DAY CANOEING £65, With Lunch - £71*
We start the day at the tidal limit at 10 once we've loaded up and made a plan for lunch and refreshment stops we jump into the boats and enter the hidden and natural gorge. Enjoy the breathtaking scenery being carried by the river past derelict quarries and ancient oak and beech forests. If we are lucky we may see otters but kites, buzzards and kingfishers are a regular sight. As we speed through the straightforward rapids at the end of the gorge we enter the open estuary as the river prepares to meet the sea. We can stop here for the Glasshouse cafe on the nature reserve or call into Cardigan. We'll navigate the various rapids through the tall reeds of the marsh, before arriving at the historic market town of Cardigan. Stop for lunch at one of the many cafe's or pubs in this town, or join us for lunch in a riverside cafe on teifi wharf for £6. As we gently cruise down to the fishing village of Saint Dogmaels, see the old ship building quays and more otters as the river turns to meet the sea. You will see geese, wading birds, cormorants, shoals of fish and wrecks before we pull in at around 15:30.
* Typical Lunch extra - £6 - Bowl of homemade soup, bread, local cheese, tea/coffee/hot choc, slice of homemade cake.
On this expedition, you can really become a skilled paddler and find escapism on the beautiful River Wye. Each day you will find your skills at canoeing become more and more second nature as you learn how to live outdoors. With the supervision of a qualified guide you will take responsibility for each other as a group as you plan times, distances and stops for each day.
There is no geographical limit on where we paddle to so no two trips are ever the same. Accommodation is mainly camping in sites right of the riverbank. All camps have toilets and showers, and most have firepits. Fixed and catered accommodation (hotels, b&b's etc) en route are available at Ross-on-Wye, Symonds Yat and Monmouth.
This is a fantastic way to learn a new sport and really use it to move through fantastic landscapes. Sometimes we are able to organise a climb on one of the limestone crags of the Forest of Dean. We'll take this opportunity to see the river from the outside in and try a different activity. Our canoe expeditions are extremely popular and we strongly advise you to book in advance to avoid disappointment.Minimum 4 persons. Cost includes camp fees and use of cooking equipment but no meals are provided.
